Interlingual Development: Down Cactus Hill Questions 

 

  1. How old were Nikki and her brother in the story?
    Nikki was 6, her brother was 4
     

  2. What did they decide to do and why?
    They decided to climb all the way to the top of cactus hill to play.
     

  3. What classifiers did Nikki use to describe how the hill looked and how she and her brother went up the hill and got lost?
    Descriptive CL (DCL) for Big tall hill that was hard dirt/rock
    Locative CL (LCL) for them climbing up the hill and the house at the bottom
    Plural CL (PCL) for Many cactus and their needles
    LCL for sun in the sky
    LCL / DCL for the narrow path home
     

  4. How long do you think the kids were away from home?
    2-3 hours
     

  5. How did Nikki vary the distance and size of things in the story?
    Mostly with facial expression and some descriptive signs. Like the narrow path with a small mouth, or the big hill with mouth open. She compares the size of cactus to the size she was at the time, they came up to her eye level or they were big all around her as they fell down the hill
     

  6. What classifier did Nikki use to describe how she and her brother went down the hill and what stopped their fall?

    LCL / Body CL / Semantic CL(?) for them falling down the hill
    PCL / BCL for them full of needles
    Body part CL for the eyelid
    DCL for the smooth spot where they finally came to a stop
     

  7. What was the ECL "tiny flashing lights" referring to?
    Emergency vehicles fire and police
     

  8. Why were the police cars and fire trucks there?
    Their parents had called them when they realized they were gone
     

  9. How did they get out of their situation?
    A firefighter climbed down on a hose and carried them out 
     

  10. What did the doctor say about the pain?
    The doctor decided they would need gas/to be put to sleep for the pain
     

  11. How long did it take to fully recover from the pain/discomfort?
    One year until finally all the tiny needles/hairs came out
     

  12. What lesson did Nikki learn from that experience?
    If you’re following a trail, don’t wander, always stay on the trail so you can return back
